GMC Acadia Size and Class and Liability Insurance

What does liability insurance cover? Liability insurance pays for other drivers’ medical bills and property damage after an accident you caused, so vehicles that are high risk will cost more to insure. What vehicles count as high risk when it comes to liability insurance?

Any vehicle that is heavy, large, or crashes easily, as these vehicles are a risk to other vehicles. While the plus side is that you are safer in a larger or heavier vehicle, the downside is that other drivers are more likely to be hurt if you crash.

So what is the GMC Acadia’s size and class? The GMC Acadia is a midsize SUV, which means it is a sturdy car. You might also ask, does the GMC Acadia have 3rd-row seating? Cars with 3rd-row seating are larger. While the GMC Acadia has 3rd-row seating, it is still considered medium size for an SUV.

One of the best ways to tell if the GMC Acadia is a high-risk vehicle, though, is to look at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) data on insurance losses by make and model.

The first set of losses below is for the GMC’s bodily injury losses.

  • GMC Acadia 4dr: -9 percent (average)
  • GMC Acadia 4dr 4WD: -27 percent (better than average)

Both of the losses are in the negative, which is great. The losses for property damage are also good, as you can see below.

  • GMC Acadia 4dr: -5 percent (average)
  • GMC Acadia 4dr 4WD: -9 percent (average)

While the losses are negative for the GMC Acadia, they are still considered average for midsize SUVs. So you will likely have a normal rate that is comparable to other midsize SUVs.

GMC Acadia Cost of Liability Insurance

We pulled sample rates from Geico for a 40-year-old male driver who travels 13,000 miles a year, has a clean driving record, and owns his 2020 GMC Acadia SL. Take a look at the prices for bodily injury coverage below (based on a six-month policy period).

  • Low ($15,000/$30,000): $41.15
  • Medium ($100,000/$200,000): $84.35
  • High ($500,000/$500,000): $135.79

It costs just under $100 to upgrade your bodily coverage from low to high, which is on the pricier side. Luckily, the price increases for property damage are lower, so it helps balance out the higher cost of bodily injury coverage.

  • Low ($5,000): $437.46
  • Medium ($20,000): $466.84
  • High ($100,000): $488.31

It costs $51 to upgrade your low coverage to high, which is less than $10 a month. Overall, the liability rates aren’t bad for a GMC Acadia, so you shouldn’t have any unpleasant surprises when you shop for insurance.

GMC Acadia Safety Features and Ratings

According to USNews, the 2020 GMC Acadia has the following standard safety features:

  • Driver Air Bag
  • Passenger Air Bag
  • Front Head Air Bag
  • Rear Head Air Bag
  • Front Side Air Bag
  • 4-Wheel ABS
  • 4-Wheel Disc Brakes
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Daytime Running Lights
  • Child Safety Locks
  • Integrated Turn Signal Mirrors
  • Traction Control
  • Blind Spot Monitor
  • Cross-Traffic Alert

When you sign up with an insurer, make sure that you are getting all the possible discounts for your safety features. Another vehicle factor that can earn you a discount is the crash test rating of your vehicle. Below are the IIHS’s crash test ratings for the 2020 GMC Acadia.

  • Small overlap front (driver-side): Good
  • Moderate overlap front: Good
  • Side: Good
  • Roof strength: Good
  • Head restraints and seats: Good

Good is the highest rating possible, so the GMC Acadia did great. Watch the video below for an example of the GMC Acadia’s crash test.

In general, SUVs do better in crashes than cars or pickups. In fact, the IIHS’s fatality data showed that for driver fatalities per million vehicles there were 23 SUV fatalities, 34 pickup fatalities, and 48 car fatalities. All occupants per million vehicles showed similar numbers, as there were 32 SUV fatalities, 42 pickup fatalities, and 69 car fatalities.

In total, there were 5,035 SUV fatalities, which was fewer than car fatalities (13,138), although slightly more than pickup fatalities (4,369). The SUV fatalities are broken up by crash type below.

  • Frontal Impact: 2,784 fatalities
  • Side Impact: 930 fatalities
  • Rear Impact: 286 fatalities
  • Other (mostly rollovers): 1,035 fatalities

The SUV is a safer vehicle, so don’t be put off by the fatalities above, as SUVs have fewer fatalities than cars.

GMC Acadia Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price

Insurers usually always refer to the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) when they calculate collision and comprehensive losses. Why? The MSRP is a good indicator of how much it will cost to repair or replace a vehicle. Because collision and comprehensive coverage pay for your vehicle repairs after an accident, these are the two coverages most affected.

Kelley Blue Book (KBB) listed the following MSRP and market prices for the 2020 GMC Acadia SL.

  • MSRP: $30,995
  • Invoice Price: $30,965
  • Fair Purchase Price: $29,200
  • Fair Market Range: $28,072 – $30,327

The MSRP is on the higher end, so you will likely have slightly higher rates. This is normal anytime you buy a more expensive vehicle. However, one thing that can help offset your higher rates is the losses for both collision and comprehensive insurance.

Take a look at the IIHS’s data on collision losses below.

  • GMC Acadia 4dr: -4 percent (average)
  • GMC Acadia 4dr 4WD: -4 percent (average)

Even though these losses are considered average for midsize SUVs, they are in the negative, which is good. The comprehensive losses are also good.

  • GMC Acadia 4dr: -27 percent (better than average)
  • GMC Acadia 4dr 4WD: -14 percent (average)

Because the GMC Acadia has decent losses, you should have decent rates. Use our free quote tool below to find which car insurance company is the cheapest.

GMC Acadia Repair Costs

Is the GMC Acadia a good car? How many miles do the GMC Acadias last? These are questions you should be asking when you shop for a new car. A car that breaks down after a hundred thousand miles or has engine problems isn’t a good car.

So what problems do GMC Acadias have? Unfortunately, RepairPal’s reliability rating of the GMC Acadia is only three out of five. This is because the average annual repair cost of the GMC Acadia is $734, which is more than average annual repair costs for midsize SUVs ($573).

Another important question you can ask when shopping for a car is looking up to see if a vehicle is being discontinued, as it suggests there may be issues with the vehicle. Is the GMC Acadia being discontinued? Luckily, the GMC Acadia is not being discontinued, so there aren’t any red flags yet.

So keep in mind that you may need to budget more for repair costs if you own a GMC Acadia. Keeping your rates low by shopping around for insurance will help if you need to spend more on repairs.
