Trying to find better car insurance rates for your Mazda CX-9? Having to pay for expensive car insurance can bleed your savings and possibly require you to analyze your spending habits. Price shopping at each renewal is a fast and free way to make sure you’re not throwing money away.

Big companies like Allstate and Progressive all claim big savings, bombarding you with TV and radio ads and it can be hard to see past the geckos and flying pigs and effectively compare rates to find the best deal.

It’s important to get comparison quotes before your policy renews because car insurance prices trend upward over time. If you had the best deal on CX-9 coverage last year a different company probably has better rate quotes today. There are a lot of ways to save on car insurance on the web, but I’m going to show you some great ways to buy car insurance cheaper.

These discounts can lower your insurance rates

Insurance can cost an arm and a leg, but you might find some hidden discounts that can dramatically reduce your bill. Some discounts apply automatically when you purchase, but less common discounts must be asked for before you get the savings.

  • Defensive Driver Discount – Completing a driver safety course could earn you a small percentage discount if you qualify.
  • Theft Deterrent – Vehicles equipped with anti-theft or alarm systems have a lower chance of being stolen and will save you 10% or more.
  • Bundled Policy Discount – If you insure your home and vehicles with the same company you may earn approximately 10% to 15%.
  • Homeowners Savings – Owning a home can get you a discount since home ownership requires personal responsibility.
  • Save over 55 – Drivers over the age of 55 may be able to get a discount up to 10% on CX-9 coverage.
  • Accident Forgiveness Coverage – This isn’t a discount exactly, but a handful of insurance companies permit an accident before raising your premiums as long as you don’t have any claims prior to the accident.
  • Onboard Data Collection – Drivers that enable their company to study driving habits by using a telematic data system like Allstate’s Drivewise may see discounts if they show good driving skills.
  • Save with a New Car – Buying a new car instead of a used car can save you some money since newer models are generally safer.
  • Seat Belt Discounts – Drivers who require all vehicle occupants to buckle their seat belts can save up to 10 percent (depending on the company) on medical payment and PIP coverage.

A little disclaimer on discounts, most discount credits are not given to the overall cost of the policy. A few only apply to the price of certain insurance coverages like comp or med pay. If you do the math and it seems like having all the discounts means you get insurance for free, you aren’t that lucky. Any amount of discount will positively reduce the amount you have to pay.

Large insurance companies and their possible discounts can be found below.

  • Farm Bureau may have discounts that include youthful driver, 55 and retired, safe driver, good student, and multi-vehicle.
  • MetLife may offer discounts for multi-policy, accident-free, good driver, good student, and claim-free.
  • Progressive offers premium reductions for online quote discount, multi-policy, online signing, good student, and continuous coverage.
  • AAA offers discounts including multi-car, AAA membership discount, good student, education and occupation, multi-policy, and anti-theft.
  • American Family has discounts for good driver, early bird, accident-free, mySafetyValet, and bundled insurance.
  • GEICO has savings for daytime running lights, good student, seat belt use, federal employee, membership and employees, air bags, and driver training.
  • State Farm discounts include multiple policy, multiple autos, student away at school, defensive driving training, Drive Safe & Save, safe vehicle, and good student.

If you need cheap insurance quotes, ask every company what discounts are available to you. Some of the earlier mentioned discounts may not be available in your state. If you would like to choose from a list of insurance companies offering insurance discounts, enter your zip code here.

Different people need different insurance coverage coverages

When it comes to buying proper insurance coverage for your personal vehicles, there is no perfect coverage plan. Each situation is unique and a cookie cutter policy won’t apply. For example, these questions may help highlight if your situation might need professional guidance.

  • What are the financial responsibility laws in my state?
  • Do I need PIP coverage since I have good health insurance?
  • How much liability do I need to cover my assets?
  • Is borrowed equipment or tools covered if stolen or damaged?
  • Do I really need UM/UIM coverage?
  • Does my insurance cover damage caused when ticketed for reckless driving?

If it’s difficult to answer those questions then you might want to talk to an agent. To find lower rates from a local agent, take a second and enter your zip code.

Coverages available on your insurance policy

Having a good grasp of your insurance policy helps when choosing the right coverages at the best deductibles and correct limits. The coverage terms in a policy can be impossible to understand and coverage can change by endorsement. Shown next are the usual coverages available from insurance companies.

Medical expense insurance – Medical payments and Personal Injury Protection insurance pay for expenses like dental work, pain medications, X-ray expenses and funeral costs. The coverages can be used to fill the gap from your health insurance policy or if you lack health insurance entirely. Coverage applies to all vehicle occupants and will also cover getting struck while a pedestrian. Personal Injury Protection is not universally available and gives slightly broader coverage than med pay

Coverage for liability – Liability coverage provides protection from damages or injuries you inflict on a person or their property. It protects you from claims by other people, and doesn’t cover damage to your own property or vehicle.

Coverage consists of three different limits, per person bodily injury, per accident bodily injury, and a property damage limit. As an example, you may have policy limits of 50/100/50 that translate to $50,000 bodily injury coverage, a limit of $100,000 in injury protection per accident, and a total limit of $50,000 for damage to vehicles and property. Alternatively, you may have one limit called combined single limit (CSL) which limits claims to one amount and claims can be made without the split limit restrictions.

Liability can pay for claims such as loss of income, bail bonds, emergency aid and medical expenses. How much liability should you purchase? That is a decision to put some thought into, but consider buying as much as you can afford.

Comprehensive (Other than Collision) – Comprehensive insurance pays for damage from a wide range of events other than collision. You first have to pay a deductible and then insurance will cover the rest of the damage.

Comprehensive coverage pays for claims like damage from flooding, a broken windshield and theft. The maximum amount you can receive from a comprehensive claim is the actual cash value, so if your deductible is as high as the vehicle’s value it’s probably time to drop comprehensive insurance.

Protection from uninsured/underinsured drivers – This coverage gives you protection from other drivers when they are uninsured or don’t have enough coverage. Covered losses include hospital bills for your injuries as well as damage to your Mazda CX-9.

Since a lot of drivers have only the minimum liability required by law, their limits can quickly be used up. For this reason, having high UM/UIM coverages should not be overlooked. Usually these coverages are identical to your policy’s liability coverage.

Collision – This pays to fix your vehicle from damage caused by collision with a stationary object or other vehicle. You will need to pay your deductible then the remaining damage will be paid by your insurance company.

Collision can pay for claims such as colliding with another moving vehicle, hitting a mailbox and colliding with a tree. This coverage can be expensive, so analyze the benefit of dropping coverage from older vehicles. Another option is to increase the deductible in order to get cheaper collision rates.

Spend less. Save more.

When you buy insurance online, don’t be tempted to reduce needed coverages to save money. There are too many instances where an insured cut physical damage coverage only to regret that the small savings ended up costing them much more. The goal is to buy a smart amount of coverage at an affordable rate but still have enough coverage for asset protection.

We just covered a lot of tips how to compare 2016 Mazda CX-9 insurance rates online. The key thing to remember is the more you quote insurance, the better likelihood of getting the cheapest insurance. Consumers may even find the lowest rates are with a small mutual company. These companies may have significantly lower car insurance rates on certain market segments compared to the large companies like State Farm and Allstate.
