Using the web to shop for auto insurance direct can be complicated if you have never used quoting online. But don't let that discourage you because comparing prices is actually very simple. Criteria which help determine

Auto insurance rates for a Dodge Pickup can be significantly different subject to many criteria. A few of these criteria are:

  • Traffic citations increase rates
  • Better credit means lower rates
  • Male drivers pay higher rates
  • Higher deductibles save money
  • NTSB crash rating for your vehicle
  • What you do for a living
  • The amount of protection requested
  • Owning a home can lower rates

A final factor that can impact Dodge Pickup insurance quotes is the model year. Used vehicles have a much lower replacement value in comparison to older models so repair costs tend to be lower which can decrease annual premiums. But new Pickup models may have a trim level with safety features including lane departure warning system, a telematics system, and a collision avoidance system that may help provide discounts that lower premiums.

How does the size and class of the Dodge Ram 3500 affect liability car insurance rates?

What are liability losses? Liability coverage consists of bodily injury coverage and property damage coverage. If you cause an accident, these coverages will pay for the other driver’s accident costs. This means that your insurer loses money whenever a liability claim is filed and approved.

The size and class of a vehicle directly impact a car’s safety rating, which in turn affects an insurer’s losses. Larger, heavier vehicles do better in crashes than vehicles that crumple like a piece of tinfoil. So if a car’s size and class suggest a car will do serious damage to other cars in a crash, insurers will raise rates to take on the risk of paying out large claims.

The Dodge Ram 3500’s classification is a very large pickup, which is one of the largest vehicles available. Within this classification are multiple models of the Dodge Ram 3500:

  • Ram 3500 4WD
  • Ram 3500 crew cab LWB
  • Ram 3500 crew LWB 4WD
  • Ram 3500 crew cab SWB 4WD
  • Ram 3500 mega cab 4WD

Each model of the Dodge Ram 3500 is in the same class and size but has different upgrade features. Crash wise, however, they are all similar in performance. This means that the liability losses for each model will be similar.

Now that you know how the size and class of the Dodge Ram 3500 relate to liability losses, let’s take a look at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s 2016 to 2018 data on liability losses for Dodge Ram 3500 models (not all the models had sufficient data for losses):

  • The Ram 3500 crew cab LWB had a property damage loss of 71 percent.
  • Ram 3500 crew LWB 4WD had a property damage loss of 62 percent and a bodily injury loss of four percent.
  • The Ram 3500 crew cab SWB 4WD had a property damage loss of 21 percent.
  • The Ram 3500 mega cab 4WD had a property damage loss of 50 percent.

None of these losses look good. A good loss is a negative number, as it means fewer claims have been paid. However, these losses do make sense when you consider that because the Dodge Ram is a large, heavy pickup, it can do significant damage to other vehicles.

The good news is that even though the property damage losses are high, the bodily injury loss is much lower. This suggests that the Dodge Ram 3500 protects its passengers, even if it destroys other vehicles in crashes.

What does liability insurance cost for a Dodge Ram 3500?

Now that we’ve covered the losses, let’s see exactly how much insurance costs for a Dodge Ram 3500. We’ve collected data from Geico based on quotes for a 40-year-old male driver in PA with a bachelor’s degree, no accidents, full coverage with a $500 deductible, and a clean driving record. The vehicle is also owned and travels an annual mileage of 13,000.

What we found was that for a six month premium for bodily injury liability, changing the coverage level resulted in the following rates:

  • Low ($15,000/$30,000): $38.02
  • Medium ($100,000/$200,000): $77.95
  • High ($500,000/$500,000): $125.48

The rates do increase quite a bit as you change coverage levels, as the cost to upgrade from low to high coverage will cost you $87 for six months. This may not seem like much to some, but when combined with property damage liability coverage, the final rate can increase a few hundred dollars.

Take a look at the property damage liability rates from Geico below. We used the same parameters from bodily injury liability.

  • Low ($5,000): $451.76
  • Medium ($20,000): $484.85
  • High ($100,000): $509.04

It will cost you about $60 to upgrade from low to high coverage on your Dodge Ram 3500.

What are the safety ratings for the Dodge Ram 3500?

The more safety features there are on your vehicle, the better your car insurance rate will be. Understanding the Dodge Ram 3500 safety ratings can therefore help you see what discounts you qualify for and what might be costing you more money.

Unfortunately, this pickup truck has not been crash-tested by either of the nation’s leading rating agencies, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. However, the Dodge Ram 3500 does come equipped with a few safety features that are worth looking into.

Insurers will lower rates for every safety feature you have, as different groupings of safety features mean that you are less likely to get into a crash, are less likely to be hurt in a crash, and are less likely to have your vehicle stolen.

The 2019 Dodge Ram 3500 base model has the following safety features:

  • Crash safety features: side, overhead, and front airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioners.
  • Crash prevention safety features: anti-lock brakes and stability control.
  • Theft safety features: ignition disable device.

Unfortunately, the base model doesn’t have very many standard safety features. For example, it is lacking front and rear crash sensors and daytime running lights. While you can get these features added as upgrades, it’s going to cost you more. Remember, though, that these features will save you money on car insurance.

The only crash test safety ratings that exist for similar truck models are for the Dodge Ram 1500, and this vehicle did not score well. Until the Insurance IInstiitute for Highway Safety releases a crash rating on the 3500 version, we won’t know if the Dodge Ram 3500 is better or worse than the Dodge Ram 1500 model.

However, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety does have crash data on the size and class that the Ram 3500 belongs to. In 2018, there were 34 driver pickup deaths per million vehicles, compared to 23 for SUVs and 48 for cars.

For all occupant deaths, there were 42 pickup occupant deaths per million vehicles, 32 SUV deaths, and 69 car deaths.

This data shows that while pickups are safer than cars, the SUV performs better in crashes than pickups. If you take a look at the list below, you can see how the pickup did in various types of crashes in 2018.

  • Frontal Impact: 2,493 deaths
  • Side Impact: 807 deaths
  • Rear Impact: 173 deaths
  • Other (mostly rollovers): 896 deaths

In 2018, there was a total of 4,369 pickup occupant deaths. This number is slightly less than SUV total deaths of 5,035 and much less than the car total deaths of 13,138.

However, several factors go into these numbers, such as the number of vehicle owners by type. More people own cars than pickups, so there will be more car deaths than pickup deaths. Still, an insurer may look at these numbers and take a little off of your car insurance premium.

What is the MSRP of the Dodge Ram 3500?

MSRP stands for manufacturer suggested retail price. It is the sticker price that the manufacturer slaps on a car before sending it off to a car lot to be sold. The MSRP price affects what you will pay as a fair market price for your vehicle, as higher MSRP prices mean higher fair market prices.

According to Kelley Blue Book, the fair market price range for a 2010 Dodge Ram 3500 regular cab is $16,782 to $21,167. The usual price is listed at $20,198. Because the models of the Dodge Ram 3500 are older, KBB doesn’t have data on the MSRP. However, you can get an idea of what it is based on the fair market price. Generally, the MSRP is at least a few thousand dollars more than the fair market price.

So how does the MSRP affect your car insurance prices? Insurers will raise rates the higher the price is for your car. If you were in an accident and your car needs to be repaired, or if it is totaled, insurers have to pay more for new repair parts or a newer vehicle. This is why if you have a loan or lease on your car, the seller may force you to carry comprehensive and collision coverages.

Both of these coverages will pay to repair your vehicle, making sure that your lender doesn’t have a huge loss after a crash because you had poor insurance.

  • Collision insurance protects you if you run into another vehicle or object.
  • Comprehensive insurance protects you if you run into an animal or your car is damaged by weather, natural disasters, theft, or vandalism.

Now that you know what MSRP is and how it affects rates, let’s take a look at the Insurance Institute for Highway Saftey’s collision loss rates for the Dodge Ram 3500 models. Why? High MSRP rates and high collision losses mean your rates will be very high.

  • Ram 3500 4WD: -35 percent (substantially better than average)
  • Ram 3500 crew cab LWB: -16 percent (average)
  • Ram 3500 crew cab LWB 4WD: 2 percent (average)
  • Ram 3500 crew cab SWB 4WD: -13 percent (average)
  • Ram 3500 mega cab 4WD: 0 percent (average)

The Dodge Ram 3500 4WD model has the best loss numbers by far. This means that in crashes, this model probably has the least amount of damages. Insurers are aware of what the best and worst vehicles for collision losses are, so a great loss number on your model means a lower rate.

Next, let’s take a look at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s data on comprehensive loss rates:

  • Ram 3500 4WD: -13 percent (average)
  • Ram 3500 crew cab LWB: 107 percent (substantially worse than average)
  • Ram 3500 crew cab LWB 4WD: 24 percent (worse than average)
  • Ram 3500 crew cab SWB 4WD: -17 percent (average)
  • Ram 3500 mega cab 4WD: 56 percent (substantially worse than average)

The comprehensive losses are much worse than the collision losses. Two of the vehicle models have substantially worse than average losses, and the best losses are only rated as average. Combined with the MSRP, these losses mean you will have a higher rate for comprehensive coverage.

How much will it cost to repair my Dodge Ram 3500?

Did you know that the average repair costs of your vehicle can add hundreds of dollars to your premium? The vehicles with some of the highest insurance rates are expensive luxury cars or cars with hard to find/expensive parts. While the Dodge Ram 3500 isn’t a luxury vehicle, insurers will still look at repair costs when calculating a rate.

According to RepairPal, the average annual cost of repairs, including an oil change, is $1,279 for a Dodge Ram 3500. This is expensive, as the average for full-size trucks is only $936.

To help you understand why this cost is so high, we are going to look at Instant Estimator’s average repair costs for various parts of the 2020 Dodge Ram 3500 crew cab with level two damage.

  • Front bumper: $389
  • Rear bumper: $399
  • Hood: $411
  • Roof: $459
  • Front door: $403
  • Back door: $391
  • Fender: $363
  • Quarter panel: $411

These costs are calculated off of average rates for body labor, paint labor, painting supplies, color tint, hazardous waste disposal, and color/sand/buff. Body labor, paint labor, and painting supplies are the most expensive items on the list, while color/sand/buff usually only costs $20 to $40.

However, this is just a general list of the usual costs to repair a Dodge Ram 3500. The costs don’t include the cost of shipping replacement parts, and every shop will have different rates for repairs. The good thing about the average costs, though, is that this is what insurers will be looking at. So if the average cost of repairs is low, it will help lower the cost of your collision and comprehensive car insurance rates.
