Feel like you’re a prisoner to high-priced insurance coverage? It’s a common feeling and there are many consumers feeling the pinch from expensive insurance coverage.

Companies like State Farm, Progressive and GEICO increase brand awareness with catchy ads and it can be hard to separate fact from fiction and do the work needed to find the best deal.

You should take the time to price shop coverage on a regular basis since insurance prices are rarely the same from one policy term to another. Just because you had the lowest price for 500 insurance a year ago you will most likely find a better rate today. Forget anything you know (or think you know) about insurance coverage because you’re about to learn the only way to lower your rates without sacrificing coverage.

If you have car insurance now, you should be able to save some money using these techniques. Finding the best rates is quite easy. But vehicle owners need to have an understanding of how insurance companies price online insurance and apply this information to your search.

Buy FIAT 500 insurance for less

Lots of factors are used when pricing auto insurance. Some of the criteria are obvious such as your driving history, but others are more obscure such as whether you are married or your financial responsibility.

  • More people means more accidents – Choosing to live in small towns and rural areas has it’s advantages if you are looking for the lowest rates. Less people translates into fewer accident claims and lower theft and vandalism rates. City drivers regularly have more aggressive driving styles and longer commutes to work. More time on the road can result in more accidents.
  • Credit history impacts premiums – Having a good credit score is a big factor in determining premium rates. People with excellent credit scores tend to be more responsible than those with bad credit. If your credit history is lower than you’d like, you may save money insuring your 2019 FIAT 500 by improving your credit score.
  • Is your vehicle theft-ready? – Owning a car that has a built-in theft deterrent system can help bring down rates. Advanced theft deterrents like LoJack tracking devices, vehicle tamper alarm systems or GM’s OnStar system can help prevent auto theft and help lower rates.
  • Your liability limits – Your policy’s liability coverage provides coverage when a court rules you are at fault for causing personal injury or damage in an accident. This coverage provides for a legal defense which can cost a lot. This coverage is very inexpensive when compared with rates for comp and collision, so drivers should make sure they buy enough to cover all assets.
  • Better prices on cars with good safety ratings – Safer cars can get you lower premiums. These vehicles result in less severe injuries and any reduction in injury severity means your insurance company pays less and cheaper rates on your policy. If your FIAT earned at least four stars on Safercar.gov or an “acceptable” rating on iihs.org you may be receiving a better rate.

The quickest method we recommend to get rate comparisons is to know the fact almost all companies have advanced systems to compare rate quotes. To begin a comparison, all you need to do is provide the companies a bit of rating information such as how much school you completed, daily mileage, if a SR-22 is required, and if the vehicle is leased. That information is sent automatically to many highly-rated insurers and you will receive price estimates quickly.

Verify you’re applying every discount

Companies offering auto insurance don’t always publicize every discount they offer in a way that’s easy to find, so we break down a few of the more common and also the lesser-known credits available to bring down your rates.

  • Anti-theft System – Cars, trucks, and SUVs that have factory anti-theft systems are less likely to be stolen and therefore earn up to a 10% discount.
  • Pay Early and Save – By paying your policy upfront instead of paying each month you can avoid monthly service charges.
  • More Vehicles More Savings – Drivers who insure multiple cars on a single policy can reduce the rates for all insured vehicles.
  • Save over 55 – If you qualify as a senior citizen, you can get a small discount on rates for 500 insurance.
  • Discount for Low Mileage – Fewer annual miles on your FIAT could be rewarded with slightly better prices than normal.
  • ABS and Traction Control Discounts – Cars and trucks equipped with ABS or steering control have fewer accidents and earn discounts up to 10%.
  • Drivers Ed for Students – It’s a good idea to have your young drivers enroll and complete driver’s education as it will make them better drivers and lower rates.
  • College Student Discount – Youth drivers who live away from home to go to college and do not take a car to college may be able to be covered for less.

A little note about advertised discounts, some credits don’t apply to the whole policy. Some only reduce individual premiums such as medical payments or collision. Just because it seems like it’s possible to get free car insurance, you aren’t that lucky.

Larger auto insurance companies and their possible discounts include:

  • GEICO offers discounts including membership and employees, multi-policy, air bags, anti-lock brakes, and anti-theft.
  • USAA discounts include annual mileage, vehicle storage, multi-policy, new vehicle, and multi-vehicle.
  • Progressive may include discounts for multi-policy, multi-vehicle, online quote discount, online signing, and good student.
  • American Family offers discounts for good student, bundled insurance, good driver, Steer into Savings, multi-vehicle, TimeAway discount, and mySafetyValet.
  • Esurance offers premium reductions for claim free, Switch & Save, anti-theft, paid-in-full, and good student.
  • Farmers Insurance policyholders can earn discounts including teen driver, youthful driver, mature driver, multi-car, bundle discounts, and good student.
  • State Farm has discounts for anti-theft, Drive Safe & Save, defensive driving training, good student, driver’s education, and safe vehicle.

Before purchasing a policy, check with all the companies which discounts you qualify for. Discounts might not be offered on policies in your state. If you would like to see a list of companies that provide some of the discounts listed above, enter your zip code here.

When should I discuss my situation with an agent?

When buying adequate coverage, there isn’t really a single plan that fits everyone. Everyone’s situation is unique and your policy should reflect that. For instance, these questions could help you determine if you could use an agent’s help.

  • Do I need Motor Club coverage?
  • How can I get my company to pay me more for my totalled car?
  • Is my vehicle covered by my employer’s policy when using it for work?
  • Am I covered when driving on a suspended license?
  • Does my 2019 FIAT 500 qualify for pleasure use?
  • How can I force my company to pay a claim?
  • Does my policy cover me when driving someone else’s vehicle?
  • Will my vehicle be repaired with OEM or aftermarket parts?
  • Are all vehicle passengers covered by medical payments coverage?
  • Is business property covered if stolen from my car?

If it’s difficult to answer those questions but you know they apply to you then you might want to talk to a licensed agent. To find lower rates from a local agent, complete your zip code.

Information about specific coverages

Understanding the coverages of insurance can help you determine the best coverages and proper limits and deductibles. Insurance terms can be confusing and coverage can change by endorsement. Shown next are the normal coverages found on the average insurance policy.

Collision coverage

Collision insurance pays for damage to your 500 caused by collision with another car or object. You have to pay a deductible and the rest of the damage will be paid by collision coverage.

Collision coverage protects against claims like crashing into a building, damaging your car on a curb and rolling your car. Paying for collision coverage can be pricey, so consider removing coverage from older vehicles. It’s also possible to choose a higher deductible to save money on collision insurance.

Coverage for liability

Liability insurance will cover injuries or damage you cause to a person or their property that is your fault. This insurance protects YOU from legal claims by others. It does not cover damage to your own property or vehicle.

It consists of three limits, bodily injury for each person, bodily injury for the entire accident, and a limit for property damage. As an example, you may have policy limits of 50/100/50 that translate to $50,000 in coverage for each person’s injuries, $100,000 for the entire accident, and a limit of $50,000 paid for damaged property. Alternatively, you may have a combined single limit or CSL that pays claims from the same limit rather than limiting it on a per person basis.

Liability can pay for claims such as court costs, attorney fees, structural damage, pain and suffering and medical expenses. The amount of liability coverage you purchase is up to you, but it’s cheap coverage so purchase as much as you can afford.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage

This coverage protects you and your vehicle’s occupants when other motorists either have no liability insurance or not enough. It can pay for injuries sustained by your vehicle’s occupants and damage to your FIAT 500.

Since a lot of drivers have only the minimum liability required by law, their liability coverage can quickly be exhausted. So UM/UIM coverage is very important. Usually these coverages are similar to your liability insurance amounts.

Comprehensive coverage

Comprehensive insurance covers damage that is not covered by collision coverage. A deductible will apply and then insurance will cover the rest of the damage.

Comprehensive can pay for things such as damage from flooding, rock chips in glass, hail damage, damage from a tornado or hurricane and fire damage. The highest amount a insurance company will pay at claim time is the actual cash value, so if the vehicle is not worth much consider dropping full coverage.

Medical payments coverage and PIP

Coverage for medical payments and/or PIP kick in for short-term medical expenses such as EMT expenses, dental work, ambulance fees and doctor visits. They can be used in conjunction with a health insurance program or if you lack health insurance entirely. It covers not only the driver but also the vehicle occupants in addition to if you are hit as a while walking down the street. Personal Injury Protection is not universally available but can be used in place of medical payments coverage

Make an honest buck

A few companies may not provide the ability to get a quote online and these smaller companies sell through local independent agencies. The cheapest 2019 FIAT 500 insurance is available online and with local insurance agents, and you need to comparison shop both in order to have the best price selection to choose from.

When getting auto insurance quotes online, it’s a bad idea to skimp on critical coverages to save a buck or two. In many cases, someone sacrificed uninsured motorist or liability limits and learned later that the small savings ended up costing them much more. The proper strategy is to buy a smart amount of coverage for the lowest cost and still be able to protect your assets.
