Are you intimidated by the crazy number of car insurance sources in your area? You have so many options that it can turn into a burden to find a cheaper company.

You should make it a habit to quote other rates every six months since insurance prices go up and down regularly. Just because you found the best rate on Civic coverage six months ago you can probably find a lower rate today. You can search a lot of car insurance online, but you can learn a lot of great tips on how to lower your car insurance premiums.

The method we recommend to compare car insurance rates is to take advantage of the fact most of the larger companies actually pay money for the chance to provide you with a free rate quote. The only thing you need to do is spend a couple of minutes providing details such as how your vehicles are used, your credit rating estimate, marital status, and if you have a valid license. The data gets sent immediately to many different companies and they provide comparison quotes very quickly.

Get lower-cost car insurance with discounts

Some insurance providers don’t list the entire discount list very clearly, so we took the time to find both well-publicized and the harder-to-find savings tricks you should be using when you buy insurance online.

  • Multiple Cars – Buying insurance for more than one vehicle with the same company may reduce the rate for each vehicle.
  • Federal Employees – Having worked for a branch of the government could qualify for a slight premium decrease on Civic coverage with some car insurance companies.
  • Payment Method – By paying your entire bill at once instead of paying each month you may have a lower total premium amount.
  • Passenger Safety Discount – Vehicles equipped with air bags or motorized seat belts can receive discounts of 20% or more.
  • No Claims – Good drivers with no accidents pay less in comparison to accident-prone drivers.
  • Theft Prevention Discount – Anti-theft and alarm system equipped vehicles can help prevent theft and therefore earn up to a 10% discount.
  • Accident Forgiveness – Not really a discount, but companies like Allstate and GEICO may permit one accident before hitting you with a surcharge if you have no claims for a particular time prior to the accident.
  • Military Discounts – Having an actively deployed family member could trigger a small discount.
  • Discounts for Seat Belt Usage – Drivers who always wear seat belts and also require passengers to buckle their seat belts could cut 10% or more off PIP or medical payments premium.

As a disclaimer on discounts, most credits do not apply to the entire cost. Most only cut the cost of specific coverages such as collision or personal injury protection. Despite the appearance that having all the discounts means you get insurance for free, companies don’t profit that way. Any qualifying discounts should help reduce the cost of your policy.

Large car insurance companies and their possible discounts can be read below.

  • GEICO may offer discounts for five-year accident-free, membership and employees, emergency military deployment, anti-theft, federal employee, and military active duty.
  • SAFECO has discounts for safe driver, bundle discounts, teen safety rewards, teen safe driver, drive less, anti-lock brakes, and accident prevention training.
  • State Farm may include discounts for safe vehicle, student away at school, Drive Safe & Save, driver’s education, good student, accident-free, and passive restraint.
  • MetLife discounts include accident-free, claim-free, good driver, defensive driver, and good student.
  • 21st Century offers discounts for early bird, teen driver, homeowners, driver training, defensive driver, and theft prevention.
  • Progressive policyholders can earn discounts including good student, multi-policy, continuous coverage, online signing, online quote discount, and homeowner.

Tailor your insurance coverage to you

When it comes to choosing the right insurance coverage for your personal vehicles, there is no best way to insure your cars. Everyone’s situation is unique.

For example, these questions can help discover whether or not you might need professional guidance.

  • Do I need rental car coverage?
  • Why do I only qualify for high-risk insurance?
  • Do I need roadside assistance coverage?
  • Do I need medical payments coverage since I have good health insurance?
  • Are my friends covered when driving my 2017 Honda Civic?
  • Am I covered when pulling a rental trailer?
  • Should I rate my 2017 Honda Civic as pleasure use or commute?

If you can’t answer these questions but one or more may apply to you, you may need to chat with a licensed agent. If you want to speak to an agent in your area, simply complete this short form.

What auto insurance coverages do you need?

Understanding the coverages of your policy helps when choosing appropriate coverage and the correct deductibles and limits. The coverage terms in a policy can be difficult to understand and nobody wants to actually read their policy.

UM/UIM (Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist) coverage – Your UM/UIM coverage protects you and your vehicle’s occupants when the “other guys” either are underinsured or have no liability coverage at all. Covered claims include medical payments for you and your occupants as well as damage to your Honda Civic.

Since a lot of drivers have only the minimum liability required by law, it only takes a small accident to exceed their coverage. For this reason, having high UM/UIM coverages is a good idea. Usually your uninsured/underinsured motorist coverages do not exceed the liability coverage limits.

Collision – Collision coverage pays for damage to your Civic caused by collision with a stationary object or other vehicle. You first must pay a deductible and then insurance will cover the remainder.

Collision coverage protects against things like colliding with another moving vehicle, damaging your car on a curb, crashing into a ditch, sideswiping another vehicle and sustaining damage from a pot hole. Collision is rather expensive coverage, so analyze the benefit of dropping coverage from older vehicles. Drivers also have the option to choose a higher deductible to get cheaper collision coverage.

Medical payments and PIP coverage – Coverage for medical payments and/or PIP provide coverage for expenses for EMT expenses, hospital visits, dental work, prosthetic devices and X-ray expenses. The coverages can be used to fill the gap from your health insurance plan or if you do not have health coverage. It covers all vehicle occupants as well as getting struck while a pedestrian. PIP coverage is only offered in select states and gives slightly broader coverage than med pay

Comprehensive auto coverage – This pays for damage from a wide range of events other than collision. A deductible will apply then the remaining damage will be covered by your comprehensive coverage.

Comprehensive can pay for things like theft, a tree branch falling on your vehicle, damage from a tornado or hurricane, hitting a deer and hitting a bird. The most you can receive from a comprehensive claim is the market value of your vehicle, so if it’s not worth much more than your deductible it’s not worth carrying full coverage.

Liability insurance – Liability coverage can cover injuries or damage you cause to other’s property or people that is your fault. It protects you against claims from other people, and does not provide coverage for your injuries or vehicle damage.

Split limit liability has three limits of coverage: bodily injury for each person injured, bodily injury for the entire accident and a property damage limit. Your policy might show policy limits of 25/50/25 which stand for $25,000 in coverage for each person’s injuries, a limit of $50,000 in injury protection per accident, and a limit of $25,000 paid for damaged property. Occasionally you may see one number which is a combined single limit which provides one coverage limit without having the split limit caps.

Liability can pay for things like medical expenses, court costs, bail bonds, funeral expenses and pain and suffering. How much liability should you purchase? That is a personal decision, but you should buy as high a limit as you can afford.
