Confused by the dozens of insurance coverage company choices? You’re not the only one! There are so many choices that it can quickly become a big hassle to find better rates.

Don’t pay full price with these six discounts

Insurance can be prohibitively expensive, but you may find discounts that you may not even be aware of. Certain discounts will be triggered automatically at the time of quoting, but some must be specially asked for in order for you to get them.

  • Own a Home – Owning a house can help you save on insurance coverage because maintaining a house demonstrates responsibility.
  • Resident Student – Youth drivers who are attending college and do not have a car may be able to be covered for less.
  • Military Discounts – Being on active duty in the military can result in better rates.
  • Sign Early and Save – Select companies give a discount for switching policies before your current expiration date. It can save you around 10%.
  • More Vehicles More Savings – Buying insurance for multiple cars or trucks with the same company qualifies for this discount.
  • Low Mileage Discounts – Fewer annual miles on your Ford can earn lower rates on the low mileage vehicles.

It’s important to understand that most discounts do not apply to your bottom line cost. The majority will only reduce individual premiums such as comp or med pay. So even though it sounds like you would end up receiving a 100% discount, it doesn’t quite work that way. Any qualifying discounts will reduce your overall premium however.

Your personal situation dictates your coverage

When buying the best car insurance coverage for your vehicles, there is no “perfect” insurance plan. Coverage needs to be tailored to your specific needs.

These are some specific questions may help you determine whether you could use an agent’s help.

  • Do I pay less for low miles?
  • Is a fancy paint job covered?
  • Am I covered when using my vehicle for business?
  • Is a blown tire covered by insurance?
  • Is my nanny covered when driving my vehicle?
  • Why am I required to buy liability insurance?
  • Am I covered if I wreck a rental car?
  • Am I covered when pulling a rental trailer?
  • Do I need PIP (personal injury protection) coverage in my state?
  • What is covered by UM/UIM coverage?

If you don’t know the answers to these questions but you think they might apply to your situation then you might want to talk to a licensed agent. If you don’t have a local agent, complete this form.

Auto insurance ads bend the truth

Companies like State Farm and Allstate consistently run ads on television and other media. All the ads make the same claim that you can save if you change your coverage to them. How does each company make the same claim? This is how they do it.

Insurance companies have a certain “appetite” for the right customer that is profitable for them. For example, a driver they prefer might be over the age of 40, has no tickets, and drives less than 10,000 miles a year. A driver who matches those parameters will get the preferred rates and as a result will probably pay quite a bit less when switching companies.

Potential customers who are not a match for the requirements will be charged higher prices which usually ends up with business not being written. The ad wording is “people who switch” not “people who quote” save that much. This is how companies can state the savings.

That is why you should compare as many rates as you can. You cannot predict which insurance companies will fit your personal profile best.

Insurance coverage specifics

Understanding the coverages of your insurance policy can help you determine the right coverages and the correct deductibles and limits. Policy terminology can be ambiguous and reading a policy is terribly boring.

Medical expense insurance

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and medical payments coverage kick in for bills like chiropractic care, rehabilitation expenses, EMT expenses, X-ray expenses and ambulance fees. They are often used to cover expenses not covered by your health insurance policy or if you are not covered by health insurance. They cover not only the driver but also the vehicle occupants and will also cover being hit by a car walking across the street. PIP coverage is only offered in select states and gives slightly broader coverage than med pay

Comprehensive (Other than Collision)

This coverage pays for damage caused by mother nature, theft, vandalism and other events. You first must pay your deductible then your comprehensive coverage will pay.

Comprehensive coverage pays for claims such as hail damage, damage from a tornado or hurricane and hitting a bird. The maximum amount you can receive from a comprehensive claim is the cash value of the vehicle, so if the vehicle is not worth much consider removing comprehensive coverage.

Liability car insurance

Liability insurance protects you from injuries or damage you cause to people or other property by causing an accident. It protects YOU against claims from other people. It does not cover damage sustained by your vehicle in an accident.

Split limit liability has three limits of coverage: per person bodily injury, per accident bodily injury, and a property damage limit. Your policy might show limits of 100/300/100 that translate to $100,000 bodily injury coverage, $300,000 for the entire accident, and property damage coverage for $100,000. Some companies may use one limit called combined single limit (CSL) which combines the three limits into one amount with no separate limits for injury or property damage.

Liability coverage pays for claims such as structural damage, pain and suffering, court costs and medical services. How much liability coverage do you need? That is up to you, but you should buy as much as you can afford.

Protection from uninsured/underinsured drivers

This coverage gives you protection from other drivers when they are uninsured or don’t have enough coverage. Covered claims include medical payments for you and your occupants and damage to your Ford F-250 Super Duty.

Since a lot of drivers only purchase the least amount of liability that is required, it doesn’t take a major accident to exceed their coverage limits. So UM/UIM coverage is important protection for you and your family. Normally these coverages are similar to your liability insurance amounts.

Collision coverage

Collision coverage will pay to fix damage to your F-250 Super Duty caused by collision with another vehicle or an object, but not an animal. You have to pay a deductible and then insurance will cover the remainder.

Collision can pay for things such as hitting a mailbox, crashing into a ditch, colliding with another moving vehicle, sustaining damage from a pot hole and colliding with a tree. This coverage can be expensive, so consider removing coverage from vehicles that are older. It’s also possible to raise the deductible to save money on collision insurance.

Don’t break the bank

When trying to cut insurance costs, you should never buy poor coverage just to save money. There are a lot of situations where someone sacrificed uninsured motorist or liability limits and learned later that a couple dollars of savings turned into a financial nightmare. Your focus should be to buy a smart amount of coverage for the lowest price while still protecting your assets.

Drivers leave their current company for any number of reasons including lack of trust in their agent, high rates after DUI convictions, being labeled a high risk driver and even poor customer service. Regardless of your reason for switching companies, finding a great new company is easier than you think.

Low-cost 2011 Ford F-250 Super Duty insurance is available on the web in addition to many insurance agents, so you should compare both to have the best selection. There are still a few companies who do not provide the ability to get a quote online and usually these small insurance companies provide coverage only through local independent agents.
