If you’re shopping for more affordable insurance on the web, are you intimidated by the wide range of insurance choices in your area? You have so many choices to choose from that it can easily become a big hassle to find a cheaper company.

Compare car insurance rate quotes

Shopping for lower car insurance rates can be a lot of work if you don’t understand the best way to get rate quotes. You could waste a few hours discussing policy coverages with agents in your area, or you can stay home and use the internet to get pricing more quickly.

Most of the best insurance companies are enrolled in a marketplace where prospective buyers submit one quote, and every company provides a quote. This system prevents you from having to do repetitive form submissions to each company.

To compare pricing enter your zip code here.

The only downside to using this type of system is buyers cannot specifically choose the insurers to get quotes from. So if you prefer to choose specific insurance companies to compare prices, we put together a list of companies who write car insurance in your area. Click to enter zip code.

Whichever way you choose to compare rates, be certain you are entering the exact same information for each price quote. If you enter mixed coverages you will not be able to decipher which rate is best. Slightly different insurance coverages can make a big difference in price. And when comparing car insurance rates, know that quoting more will enable you to find a lower rate than you’re paying now. Not every company allows you to get online rate quotes, so you should also compare price quotes from them, too.

Take these seven policy discounts and save

Some companies do not advertise every discount they offer very clearly, so we took the time to find some of the more common in addition to some of the lesser obvious ways to save on auto insurance.

  • ABS and Traction Control Discounts – Cars and trucks with anti-lock braking systems are much safer to drive so you can save 10 percent or more.
  • Air Bag Discount – Cars that have air bags could see savings of 25 to 30%.
  • One Accident Forgiven – Not necessarily a discount, but companies like State Farm and Allstate will let one accident slide before they charge you more for coverage if you are claim-free prior to being involved in the accident.
  • Online Discount – Certain auto insurance companies will give you a small discount shop insurance coverage over the internet.
  • Auto/Life Discount – Not all insurance companies offer life insurance, but some may give you a break if you buy auto and life insurance together.
  • Own a Home – Owning a home can help you save on auto insurance because maintaining a house requires personal responsibility.
  • Early Signing – A few larger companies allow discounts for renewing your policy prior to the expiration date on your current policy. You can save around 10% with this discount.

It’s important to understand that many deductions do not apply to the entire cost. Some only reduce individual premiums such as comp or med pay. Even though it may seem like you could get a free auto insurance policy, it just doesn’t work that way.

A few of the larger companies and a partial list of their discounts can be found below.

  • American Family may include discounts for Steer into Savings, air bags, defensive driver, mySafetyValet, good student, and bundled insurance.
  • Nationwide includes discounts for accident-free, defensive driving, good student, anti-theft, easy pay, and business or organization.
  • MetLife may offer discounts for good driver, accident-free, defensive driver, good student, claim-free, multi-policy
  • 21st Century discounts include good student, 55 and older, defensive driver, student driver, theft prevention, air bags, and early bird.
  • Farmers Insurance offers discounts including homeowner, teen driver, early shopping, good student, pay in full, and bundle discounts.
  • Allstate policyholders can earn discounts including early signing, defensive driver, auto/life discount, eSmart discount, resident student, and utility vehicle.

Check with each insurance company which discounts you may be entitled to. Savings might not be offered on policies in every state. If you would like to choose from a list of providers that have a full spectrum of discounts, enter your zip code here.

Which policy gives me the best coverage?

When it comes to choosing the best insurance coverage for your personal vehicles, there is no “best” method to buy coverage. Everyone’s situation is unique.

For example, these questions could help you determine if your insurance needs might need professional guidance.

  • Is there coverage for injuries to my pets?
  • Am I covered when driving on a suspended license?
  • Am I covered when renting a car or should I buy coverage from the car rental agency?
  • What can I do if my company denied a claim?
  • Do I have coverage when making deliveries for my home business?
  • Is my Cadillac CT5 covered if I use it for business?
  • Is business equipment covered while in my vehicle?
  • Should I buy more coverage than the required minimum liability coverage?
  • I have health insurance so do I need medical payments coverage?
  • When would I need rental car insurance?

If you don’t know the answers to these questions but one or more may apply to you, then you may want to think about talking to an insurance agent. To find lower rates from a local agent, fill out your zip code.

Car insurance policy coverages for a Cadillac CT5

Having a good grasp of your policy helps when choosing appropriate coverage at the best deductibles and correct limits. Car insurance terms can be difficult to understand and even agents have difficulty translating policy wording.

Liability coverage – Liability insurance will cover injuries or damage you cause to a person or their property. It consists of three limits, bodily injury per person, bodily injury per accident and property damage. Your policy might show liability limits of 50/100/50 that translate to a $50,000 limit per person for injuries, a per accident bodily injury limit of $100,000, and a limit of $50,000 paid for damaged property.

Liability coverage pays for things such as bail bonds, attorney fees, loss of income, funeral expenses and repair bills for other people’s vehicles. How much coverage you buy is a decision to put some thought into, but buy as large an amount as possible.

Medical expense coverage – Med pay and PIP coverage kick in for expenses such as X-ray expenses, doctor visits and hospital visits. They are used to fill the gap from your health insurance policy or if you lack health insurance entirely. Medical payments and PIP cover you and your occupants and also covers getting struck while a pedestrian. PIP coverage is not universally available and gives slightly broader coverage than med pay

Uninsured or underinsured coverage – Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist coverage protects you and your vehicle’s occupants when other motorists do not carry enough liability coverage. It can pay for injuries to you and your family as well as your vehicle’s damage.

Since many drivers carry very low liability coverage limits, it doesn’t take a major accident to exceed their coverage limits. This is the reason having UM/UIM coverage is a good idea.

Collision – Collision insurance will pay to fix damage to your CT5 resulting from a collision with an object or car. You will need to pay your deductible then your collision coverage will kick in.

Collision coverage pays for things such as scraping a guard rail, crashing into a building, crashing into a ditch, damaging your car on a curb and driving through your garage door. Collision coverage makes up a good portion of your premium, so consider dropping it from lower value vehicles. It’s also possible to raise the deductible to save money on collision insurance.

Comprehensive protection – This coverage pays for damage caused by mother nature, theft, vandalism and other events. You need to pay your deductible first then your comprehensive coverage will pay.

Comprehensive insurance covers things like damage from flooding, fire damage and vandalism. The highest amount your car insurance company will pay is the cash value of the vehicle, so if your deductible is as high as the vehicle’s value it’s probably time to drop comprehensive insurance.
