Nobody I know likes having to buy auto insurance, particularly when they are paying too much.

You have so many car insurance companies to choose from, and although it’s a good thing to have multiple companies, having more auto insurance companies makes it harder to adequately compare rates.

Comprehensive Auto Insurance Comparison Quotes

Effectively comparing auto insurance prices can take time and effort if you aren’t aware of the best way to get rate quotes. You can waste a few hours (or days) talking to insurance agencies in your area, or you can stay home and use the web to get prices fast.

Most of the best insurance companies belong to an insurance system where insurance shoppers submit their information once, and every company returns a competitive quote determined by their information. This system prevents you from having to do form submissions for each company you want a rate for.

The one downside to using this type of system is that consumers can’t choose the providers you want pricing from. If you prefer to choose specific providers to compare rates, we have a listing of companies who write auto insurance in your area. Click to view list.

Whichever method you choose, make sure you use exactly the same coverage information for each price quote. If your comparisons have different deductibles it will be next to impossible to determine the lowest rate for your Chevy Cruze. Slightly different limits can mean a large discrepancy in price. And when price shopping your coverage, having more price comparisons gives you a better chance of getting the best offered rates.

Companies offer discounts so take them!

Insuring your fleet can be pricey, but companies offer discounts that you may not know about. Certain discounts will be applied at the time you complete a quote, but some must be specially asked for prior to receiving the credit.

  • Theft Prevention Discount – Cars that have factory anti-theft systems can help prevent theft and will save you 10% or more.
  • Defensive Driver – Successfully completing a course in driver safety could cut 5% off your bill depending on where you live.
  • Organization Discounts – Affiliation with a civic or occupational organization could qualify you for a break when buying car insurance on Cruze coverage.
  • Anti-lock Brake Discount – Vehicles equipped with ABS or steering control are safer to drive and qualify for as much as a 10% discount.
  • Lower Rates for Military – Having a deployed family member could mean lower rates.
  • Passive Restraints – Cars that have air bags and/or automatic seat belt systems can receive discounts of more than 20%.
  • Sign Early and Save – Some companies give discounts for buying a policy before your current expiration date. It can save you around 10%.
  • Auto/Home Discount – When you combine your home and auto insurance with the same company you may save at least 10% off all policies.
  • Life Insurance Discount – Larger companies have a discount if you purchase life insurance from them.

Consumers should know that some credits don’t apply to all coverage premiums. Some only reduce individual premiums such as collision or personal injury protection. Even though it may seem like you can get free auto insurance, it just doesn’t work that way. Any amount of discount will reduce your premiums.

Do I just need basic coverages?

When buying coverage, there is no perfect coverage plan. Your needs are not the same as everyone else’s so your insurance needs to address that. For instance, these questions could help you determine whether you would benefit from an agent’s advice.

  • Will filing a claim cost me more?
  • Can I rent a car in Mexico?
  • Can I make deliveries for my home business?
  • Is my teen driver covered when they drive my company car?
  • Does having multiple vehicles earn me a discount?
  • How can I get high-risk coverage after a DUI?

If you can’t answer these questions, then you may want to think about talking to an agent. If you don’t have a local agent, simply complete this short form or click here for a list of insurance companies in your area.

Information about specific coverages

Learning about specific coverages of car insurance helps when choosing which coverages you need and proper limits and deductibles. The coverage terms in a policy can be ambiguous and coverage can change by endorsement. Shown next are the usual coverages available from car insurance companies.

Auto liability

This can cover damages or injuries you inflict on other’s property or people that is your fault. It protects YOU from legal claims by others. Liability doesn’t cover your injuries or vehicle damage.

Coverage consists of three different limits, bodily injury for each person, bodily injury for the entire accident, and a limit for property damage. You commonly see liability limits of 25/50/25 that means you have a limit of $25,000 per injured person, a per accident bodily injury limit of $50,000, and a total limit of $25,000 for damage to vehicles and property. Some companies may use a combined limit which limits claims to one amount without having the split limit caps.

Liability insurance covers things such as repair costs for stationary objects, emergency aid, medical expenses, funeral expenses and loss of income. How much liability coverage do you need? That is your choice, but consider buying as large an amount as possible.

Uninsured Motorist or Underinsured Motorist insurance

Your UM/UIM coverage protects you and your vehicle’s occupants when other motorists either have no liability insurance or not enough. Covered losses include hospital bills for your injuries and also any damage incurred to your Chevy Cruze.

Due to the fact that many drivers only carry the minimum required liability limits, it only takes a small accident to exceed their coverage. This is the reason having UM/UIM coverage should not be overlooked. Most of the time the UM/UIM limits do not exceed the liability coverage limits.

Collision coverage protection

This covers damage to your Cruze resulting from colliding with an object or car. A deductible applies and then insurance will cover the remainder.

Collision can pay for claims like damaging your car on a curb, colliding with a tree, hitting a mailbox and backing into a parked car. Paying for collision coverage can be pricey, so consider removing coverage from older vehicles. It’s also possible to increase the deductible to save money on collision insurance.

Insurance for medical payments

Coverage for medical payments and/or PIP reimburse you for short-term medical expenses like doctor visits, rehabilitation expenses and X-ray expenses. They are often used to fill the gap from your health insurance program or if you lack health insurance entirely. They cover both the driver and occupants and also covers getting struck while a pedestrian. Personal injury protection coverage is not available in all states and gives slightly broader coverage than med pay

Comprehensive coverage (or Other than Collision)

This coverage covers damage from a wide range of events other than collision. You first must pay your deductible then the remaining damage will be covered by your comprehensive coverage.

Comprehensive coverage protects against claims like damage from a tornado or hurricane, rock chips in glass and falling objects. The highest amount you can receive from a comprehensive claim is the cash value of the vehicle, so if the vehicle’s value is low it’s probably time to drop comprehensive insurance.
